Following in the footsteps of their ancestors, a party of fourteen youths and seven adults descended into the bowels of the earth to work a shift in the last working ore mine in Europe. In the spirit of the Red Men of Egremont, they enjoyed a lunch of jam sandwiches in the darkness.
Led by Father Paul Johnstone, they were aiming to raise money through sponsorship for The Joint, a youth project which is hoping to open in February 2003 in the old Wyndham Youth Club. They have already been promised approximately £200, and Egremont Today will be delighted to increase whatever they raise by 25%.
