Help Us Light Up Egremont’s Christmas

The campaign to brighten up Egremont’s next Christmas has received a huge boost from the support of our champion fundraiser for local causes, Dot Swinburn.  She loves to see people having a good time as her magnificent efforts for Crab Fair have proved, and this time she is organising a charity night to help provide Egremont with  Christmas lights worthy of the town.  It will be held in the La’al Club on 20th April, and the attractions will include a disco, bingo and a raffle, starting at 7.30pm.  You can get tickets for £3, and at this incredibly cheap price they even include sandwiches.  Come along to have an enjoyable evening and help the town to celebrate its next Christmas in style.

Such enthusiasm is breathing new life into Egremont Special Events committee, which used to hold an annual Christmas event, before it folded through lack of support a few years ago.The disappointment of the Christmas lights display in Egremont, which had more lights off than on, was a wake up call which led to this Amenity Committee being reformed, and they aim to celebrate Christmas  2012 with completely new white LED lights in all the trees on the Main Street as well as a new Christmas tree sited at the north of the town and a motif at the south end of the town.

There is also Christmas  event arranged for Sunday 2nd December where a Christmas  market is planned. CFM will be attending, local talent will be showcasing their skills and Father Christmas will also be paying a visit.  This event will culminate in a firework display from Egremont Castle.

This committee’s goal, however, does not come cheap so they are working hard to raise funds and several members of the public will be holding events throughout the year, like that which Dot has organised.  Look out for the posters and please support these events whenever you can.

These things do not come cheap.  The approximate cost for the first year will be £35,000, but it should be easier to keep up the momentum in subsequent years.  If you are willing to sell tickets, hold an event or donate a prize or money to this cause, then please contact:

Egremont Town Council on 01946 820254 or

The amenity committee are also asking all shops to “light up their window”.  This will enhance the “avenue of lights” created along the Main Street and will make Egremont a Christmas market town its residents can be proud of as well as attracting visitors from surrounding areas.

Your support and interaction in this committee’s vision would be fantastic and a great comeback for Egremont and its community.
